TYPOGRAPHY

Designing a New Media Certificate

Another task in my New Media Design course was to design the graduation certificate that seniors would receive on their graduation day. We were to create five versions of our design using various typefaces, weights, and sizing.

I began here:

I enjoy using odd shapes and diagonals in my designs so I decided to begin with those. This version is a bit rough as far as the visual appeal of the colors and the format of typography. I created each triangle individually.

In this design, I also created all of the triangles by hand which was time consuming and still didn't look great. I decided to use a scale of the color red to make the design look more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. I found a PNG of the New Media Institutes logo and implemented that into my design. The format of this one was more appealing with ample negative space balanced symmetrically with the deeper red triangles. The hierarchy also flows better on than the first.

In my third design, I wanted to play with the layout so I switched to a landscape orientation. I stuck with the red color scale but made it more extreme. I wanted to play with leading lines and the white space in order to draw the viewers eye to certain areas. This one could use a little bit revamping to make the design symmetrical. Overall, I like the hierarchy of text and the edgier orientation of shapes.

Here we have another set of triangles coming in to play. Their lines and balance was pleasing to me, although the alignment of the typography could use some editing. I still like the hierarchy of text in this one. #4 here is a bit of a wild card but I thought I'd go for it.

Finally, I used the typography, spacing, and color scale I liked the most out of all of my previous designs to create a classic portrait style certificate. I included the New Media Institute logo again for a professional finish. Personally, I prefer this one.
